One for the books today! Our October coral restoration dive in Key Largo kicked off at 9:00 am under clear conditions throughout the day. The crew joined us for what turned out to be a productive morning on the water, working with the local reef systems that make this area special for conservation diving. We guided the crew as part of Key Dives with our Coral Restoration Dive in Key Largo program.

Once the stage was set, we focused on buoyancy control, underwater navigation, and controlled ascents while working the restoration sites. The crew encountered Green Sea Turtle and Greater Amberjack during our time below, adding some solid wildlife viewing to the conservation work.

Key Dives runs these coral restoration dives on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month as part of the I.CARE initiative, and October continues to deliver consistent conditions for this type of specialized diving. The program works well for certified divers who want to contribute to marine conservation while gaining hands-on experience with coral planting, cleaning, and monitoring activities. It was a beautiful January morning as I welcomed Sean to the Magnolia St Fishing Dock for our Snorkeling Trip with Fly To Fish Guide Service. As we headed out, I could tell you and your friend were pumped to get out there and explore the underwater world. And let me tell you, we found some good stuff!Our guided trip was quite the adventure we went to work searching the waters for unique aquatic amidst the coral reefs. We spotted several shark of varied species as well as a huge variey of coral fish. It didn't take long before we saw an impressive school of Yellowfin tuna! We didn't manage to see any other sharks, but we still had a blast out there, enjoying the clear water and everything the marine life had to offer.By the time we wrapped up, they both had huge smiles on your faces. What a day out on the flats near Islamorada! I had the pleasure of taking Gtest out for a Florida Keys Flats Fishing trip with Fly To Fish Guide Service, and I can say with certainty that we had a blast. The weather was with us - partly cloudy throughout the day, which is ideal for spotting fish in the shallows. The water conditions were great, crystal clear for stalking our target species.

We started the day rigging up the 18' poling skiff, making sure Gtest's 8-weight fly rod was ready to go. It didn't take long before we started seeing some Permit tailing in the distance. I poled us into position and Gtest made a few careful casts, keeping the fly just out of their line of sight. On the third cast, one of the Permit turned and slammed the fly! Gtest set the hook and the fight was on - these fish really put up an incredible battle on the light tackle. After a few tense minutes, we were able to leader the Permit alongside the boat for a quick photo before releasing it unharmed. 

What made this trip so special was not just the quality of the fishing, but the whole experience. Sight-fishing the flats and backcountry is such a unique thrill, constantly on the lookout for those tailing fish. And Gtest was a natural - his double-haul casting was spot on, even in the light winds we had today. In between the fish, we enjoyed the stunning Florida Keys scenery, pointed out the birds and other wildlife. It was just a fun, laid-back day on the water.
